Technology Assessment and Goal Alignment
We can assist your nonprofit organization in developing a comprehensive technology plan that will support the organization in meeting its short-term and long-term goals. This includes an inventory and analysis of the technology currently in use, and identification of opportunities to use technology more effectively.
Recommendations are integrated into a comprehensive plan and budget. Funding concerns are recognized and potential funding sources are identified. As the plan is put in place, NPHD provides training and support for staff and other stakeholders.
Technology Integration
It is common for organizations to have multiple software applications and sometimes even separate computer networks that don’t “talk” to each other. By integrating software and hardware, the NPHD can make your applications work together. That means data can be entered once and used repeatedly, or called up in different locations. The output of one software application can automatically be used in another process, eliminating manual data transfer. Data entry errors are reduced, as well. Your organization can spend less time on data management and more on helping clients.
Networking
Networking computers allows files, software and databases to be shared between individual users and essential data to be backed up securely. The NonProfit HelpDesk determines the most appropriate networking option for an organization, and can handle the physical set-up of a network (wiring) and the required software configuration. In addition to network installations, the NonProfit HelpDesk offers updates and troubleshooting to maintain existing networks.
Security
Most small to mid-sized nonprofits can’t afford the technology staff to develop procedures for effective computer security. Yet the significant increase in connectivity makes networks and computers increasingly vulnerable.
Safe, secure computers and networks are essential for data storage, information retrieval and service delivery, so it is critical that computer infrastructures be as secure as they are accessible.
Project Secure
The NonProfit HelpDesk has created Project Secure to help New York City nonprofit organizations develop a systemic approach to combating threats to computer security. Project Secure offers 21 nonprofit organizations the opportunity to participate in a security assessment in which each organization will identify its own risks, e.g. exposure to viruses and spyware, risks to confidentiality, risks to data integrity, etc.
Our consultants will train representatives from each organization in using the methodology and tools of the assessment. The representatives will then lead the assessment process for their agencies, and report their results back, receiving guidance and support throughout the process. Participants will then receive two months of on-going guidance on remediation procedures, with hands-on support as required. This support may include assistance in selecting and implementing programs to block viruses and spyware, help in implementing new system and Internet access procedures, guidance on data backup and software updates and other relevant assistance.
The project will also include an online, snail-mail based and phone survey of security awareness among l nonprofit organizations and the creation of training material for security awareness.
